Laos is prioritising food security, competitiveness and Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) as part of its agricultural development strategy.
The development is guided by two complementary frameworks: the Agriculture Development Strategy to 2025 and Vision to 2030.
At the same time, the Green and Sustainable Agriculture Framework for Laos to 2030 emphasises climate-smart and environmentally friendly practices, promoting GAP reducing chemical inputs, and enhancing agro-biodiversity.
Overalll, the goal is to ensure Laos’s agriculture remains competitive, climate-resilient, and inclusive.
This shift has created favourable conditions for Vietnamese seed enterprises to expand their presence, particularly as key crops move towards more technology-driven, sustainable production models.
Vietnam National Seed Group (Vinaseed), a subsidiary of the PAN Group, sees this as a major opportunity to strengthen and expand its position in the market.
The company already has a strong position in the market thanks to the hybrid maize variety LVN10.
As a strategic crop, maize remains a significant crop for Laos. It accounts for 15% of total agricultural output, with production reaching 1.2 million tonnes in 2024 and export turnover of around U$80m.
The variety has earned the confidence of local farmers thanks to its adaptability to Laos’ climate and soil conditions, robust growth, and consistently high yields.
Vinaseed said its LVN10 hybrid has built a solid reputation after years in the Lao market, with farmers valuing its adaptability to local climate and soils, robust growth, stable yields, and clear economic returns.
Together, these factors have continued to drive farmer confidence to invest and expand the cultivation areas with the hybrid.
Exploring opportunities
Beyond maize, Vinaseed is exploring partnerships in rice and vegetables, two categories with strong growth potential in Laos.
Rice represents around half of the country’s agricultural output and generates about U$150m in annual exports.
Meanwhile, the vegetable sector is expanding under organic farming initiatives supported by farmer cooperatives.
Additionally, Vinaseed expressed interest in collaborating with local partners in seed development, technology transfer, and agricultural product distribution.
It emphasised the importance of understanding market needs in Laos, describing it as a top priority for the firm.
Its participation in trade events such as the Vietnam–Laos Trade Connectivity Fair 2025, helps it to stay close to the ground.
This hands-on approach helps it develop seed varieties suited to local soils and supports sustainable agricultural development, demonstrating its commitment to strengthening cooperation and boosting productivity for Lao farmers.
“With its proven high-quality seed portfolio and long-term collaboration strategy, Vinaseed is steadily affirming its position not only in Vietnam but also across regional markets, contributing to the sustainable development of Vietnam-Laos agriculture.”
